Artist Statement

My current series focuses on community relationships through the lens of public spaces. In an expressive documentation using oil paint, this work celebrates and commemorates the mundane everyday spaces that someone may pass through on their day. My practice involves photographing spaces within my own community and then recreating them as paintings. Small watercolor preliminary studies were made in order to process painting and drawing techniques for the larger oil paintings. The paintings exaggerate color in an atmospheric manner in each individual space. Patterning and line are used to create dimension adding character and emotional value to each space. The viewer may sense a level of familiarity within the paintings that relates to their own life, moving through community spaces.
